The working rule: fix it if the repair costs less than the discount a buyer will use it to negotiate with. Small visible repairs done before listing signal that the car has been looked after, which is exactly the impression you want to create.

Gather your service history

A car with a complete service history sells faster and for more money. Even a partial history is worth having. Before you list, pull together:

• The logbook with stamps
• Dealer service printouts where stamps are missing or the car was serviced electronically
• Receipts for any major mechanical work
• Any inspection reports or roadworthy certificates

If the car was always serviced at a brand dealership, call them and ask for a print of the full service history. Most franchised dealerships will provide this at no cost, and it takes only a few minutes to arrange. Whether you're selling second-hand Ford cars or a used Mazda CX-5, buyers are more willing to pay a premium when they can see the maintenance record. A documented history removes one of the biggest objections before negotiations even begin.

Get your documents in order

Buyers will ask for specific paperwork at the point of sale. Have these ready before you list so the process moves quickly:

• Certificate of registration: confirms you're the registered owner and the car is legally on the road
• Photo ID: required to verify your identity as the seller
• Finance payout confirmation: if money is owing, you'll need written confirmation from your lender of the outstanding amount and settlement process
• Sale receipt: date, price, VIN, and both parties' details

In NSW, the seller is legally required to lodge a Notice of Disposal within 14 days of the sale. This step is easy to forget in the relief of closing a deal, but it matters: skip it and you can continue receiving fines and infringement notices for a car you no longer own. If you sell to Carma, the transfer paperwork including the disposal notice is managed as part of the process.

Take photos that do the work

Most buyers decide whether to enquire based on photos alone. A well-prepared car photographed badly will be overlooked. That same car photographed properly will generate more enquiries and stronger offers.

Shoot outside in daylight, preferably on an overcast day. Harsh direct sunlight creates deep shadows and highlights every swirl mark in the paint. Cover all angles: front three-quarter, rear three-quarter, both side profiles, driver's interior, passenger area, rear seats, boot, and under the bonnet.

If there's any damage, include a close-up and disclose it upfront in your listing. It builds trust with serious buyers and filters out time-wasters who would walk away at inspection anyway. A smartphone is all you need for good photos. The key is light and a clean background, not camera equipment.

Sell to Carma and skip the prep stress

If you'd rather skip the listing process and sell your car directly, sell to Carma. Get a competitive market-based offer in under ten minutes, no listing required. Carma manages the paperwork, and you walk away without having to manage photos, enquiries, or test drives.
