Used Holden Cars for Sale in Australia

Holden may have closed its doors in 2020, but the cars it left behind are a smart buy. There are tens of thousands of used Holden cars on Australian roads, backed by independent mechanics who know them well and parts that are widely available. Whether you're after a large sedan, a capable diesel ute, or a practical small SUV, there's a used Holden for sale in Australia worth a serious look.

Why choose a used Holden?

Holden built cars specifically for Australian roads. The brand spent decades engineering vehicles to handle long highway runs, demanding summer heat, and hard daily use that many imported small cars weren't designed for. That focus means used Holdens hold up well with regular servicing.

Prices have settled since 2020, independent mechanics have deep experience with Holden drivetrains, and parts for the Commodore draw on the GM global supply chain. GMSV has also committed to supporting Holden spare parts beyond the mandatory 10-year minimum.

For buyers who want a large car, a workhorse ute, or an affordable small SUV without premium badge markup, used Holdens still represent genuine value.

Holden Commodore

The used Holden Commodore is the centrepiece of Holden's Australian legacy. The locally-built VF came as a sedan, Sportwagon, or Ute with a 3.6-litre V6 or 6.0/6.2-litre V8. The final ZB moved to a front-wheel drive platform, offering a 2.0-litre turbo petrol, 2.0-litre turbo diesel, or 3.6-litre V6 in liftback and Tourer wagon body styles. Either generation delivers a full-size car with genuine long-distance ability and strong parts support.

Holden Colorado

The used Holden Colorado competes directly with the Ford Ranger. The RG series, sold from 2012 to 2020, used a single 2.8-litre Duramax turbocharged diesel with a braked towing capacity of 3,500 kg and a payload up to 1,000 kg. Body styles include single cab, space cab, and crew cab in rear-wheel drive and dual-range four-wheel drive. It's a workhorse with strong parts availability and a wide network of diesel specialists.

Holden Trax

The used Holden Trax is a compact SUV that built a steady following among urban and suburban buyers. The TJ series ran from 2013 to early 2020, using a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 103kW and 200Nm paired with a six-speed automatic. It's front-wheel drive only, which keeps running costs low. Later variants included a reverse camera, autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, and Bluetooth. As a compact used SUV from Holden's final years, the Trax is a sensible, well-specced option without a high entry price.

Holden Astra

The used Holden Astra rewards buyers who look past the badge. The BK generation ran from 2017 to 2020 on the GM Delta II platform as a five-door hatchback or wagon, with a 1.4-litre turbo petrol producing 110kW and a six-speed automatic or manual. Autonomous emergency braking was standard across most of the range, making it a well-equipped small car at used car prices.

What to look for when buying a used Holden

Service history matters more than kilometres on a used Holden. The Commodore V8 is a robust engine, but oil changes and cooling system maintenance need to be consistent. Check for signs of overheating, inspect the differential for oil seeps on rear-wheel drive variants, and confirm the automatic transmission shifts cleanly through all gears.

For the Colorado, the 2.8-litre Duramax diesel benefits from regular fuel filter changes and quality diesel. Ask to see the service logbook, listen for turbo lag or smoke on hard acceleration, and on higher-kilometre examples check that the exhaust gas recirculation system has been maintained. Test four-wheel drive operation before you commit.

The Trax and Astra both require 95-octane unleaded — confirm the correct fuel has been used, as lower-octane can affect the turbo over time. Both have plastic-intensive interiors, so look for wear in high-contact areas as a sign of overall care. Carma's car finance gives you a clear number before you start comparing cars.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are used Holden cars still a good buy now that the brand is gone?

Used Holden cars remain a sound purchase in Australia. Independent mechanics have extensive experience with Holden drivetrains, parts supply is strong via GM's global supply chain, and specialist Holden suppliers operate across the country. GMSV has also committed to supporting Holden spare parts beyond the mandatory 10-year minimum, so availability is not expected to tighten sharply in the near term.

Can Holden cars still be serviced?

Yes. Holden cars can be serviced by any qualified independent mechanic in Australia. Franchised dealers no longer exist, but many former dealer service centres have continued under new banners with the same staff and tooling. General service items and a wide range of genuine and aftermarket components are available from mainstream parts suppliers Australia-wide.

What is the best used Holden to buy in Australia?

The best used Holden depends on what the buyer needs. For a large sedan with strong parts support, the Commodore is the standout. The used Holden Colorado suits buyers who need a capable ute, with its 2.8-litre Duramax diesel and 3,500 kg braked towing capacity. The used Holden Trax suits compact SUV buyers, and the used Holden Astra suits those after a small car with a turbo engine and solid safety equipment.

Are Holden spare parts hard to find?

Spare parts availability varies by model. Commodore parts are the most widely available, backed by GM's global supply chain and a strong local wrecker network. Colorado parts benefit from the Duramax engine's international use, and Trax and Astra parts are available through aftermarket suppliers across Australia. Body panels for lower-volume models can take longer to source than mechanical parts.

Does buying a used Holden mean higher running costs?

Not necessarily. Holden cars were engineered for Australian conditions and are considered reliable with proper servicing. The Commodore V6 and Colorado diesel both have strong reputations for longevity, and consumables are priced at standard market rates. Labour for independent mechanics servicing Holden models is comparable to Japanese or European makes.
