Semi-synthetic oil sits between the two. It performs better than straight mineral oil but breaks down faster than full synthetic. For cars that specify it, a 7,500km to 10,000km interval is a reasonable guide, but again, the owner's manual has the final say.

The only number that actually matters: your owner's manual

This is the part most advice skips over. Every car manufacturer specifies an oil change interval for your exact engine, tested under conditions that account for normal use. That interval is in your owner's manual, usually in the service schedule section near the back.

If you don't have the physical manual, it's typically available as a PDF on the manufacturer's website. For most mainstream used cars, including popular used Toyota models, the interval falls between 10,000km and 15,000km for full synthetic oil.

What a mechanic suggests or what the sticker on your windscreen says is secondary. Those figures are starting points for a conversation, not substitutes for the manufacturer specification. The oil change interval australia drivers should follow is the one their car's manufacturer actually specifies.

When you might need to change more often

The service interval in your manual assumes "normal" driving conditions. In practice, some driving patterns are harder on oil and warrant more frequent changes.

Short trips are the biggest one. If most of your driving is stop-start urban travel under 10 minutes, the engine doesn't always reach full operating temperature. That means fuel and moisture don't fully burn off and end up contaminating the oil faster than a highway kilometre count would suggest.

Other situations worth noting: towing heavy loads regularly, driving in dusty outback conditions, or running an older engine with higher clearances than modern tolerances allow. If any of these apply, dropping to 7,500km intervals even with synthetic oil is sensible.

Signs your oil needs changing sooner

Your car will usually tell you before your service reminder does. Dark brown or black oil on the dipstick, rather than the amber colour of fresh oil, means it's carrying a lot of contaminants. A burning smell from the engine bay can signal oil getting too hot or leaking onto hot surfaces. A lower-than-normal oil level on the dipstick, without any visible leak, suggests the engine is consuming oil, which is a separate issue worth investigating with a mechanic.

Some newer cars have an oil life monitoring system that calculates remaining oil life based on driving conditions rather than kilometres. These systems are generally accurate, but they're a complement to a physical dipstick check, not a replacement.

The real risk is under-servicing, not over-servicing

Going 5,000km longer than your manual specifies is unlikely to destroy an engine. But consistently neglecting oil changes, or mixing oil types incorrectly when topping up, is how bearing wear and sludge build-up happen. That kind of damage is expensive and slow to show up.

The records matter too. When you buy a used car, a complete service history lets you see exactly how the previous owner maintained it, not just take their word for it. Carma verifies service history on every car it stocks, so buyers can see how the car was actually looked after before they commit. You can explore how Carma works and what goes into the Carma standard if that level of transparency matters to you.

Your oil, your manual, your call

The right oil change interval in Australia is the one in your owner's manual. For most modern cars on synthetic oil, that's 10,000km to 15,000km or 12 months. If you're doing mostly short urban trips, lean toward the shorter end. If you're unsure which oil type your car uses, the manual, the oil filler cap, or a quick call to a mechanic will tell you in 30 seconds.

Staying on top of it is one of the cheapest ways to protect an engine. And if you're looking for a used car that already comes with a documented service record, browse the cars at Carma, where every car's service history is part of what you see before you buy.
