Used Volkswagen Amarok for Sale in Australia

The Volkswagen Amarok sits apart from the mainstream dual-cab ute field by offering a cabin and driving experience that competitors have historically reserved for larger 4WDs. Used Volkswagen Amarok utes in Australia attract buyers who need genuine working capability without wanting to compromise on interior quality or on-road refinement. Both generations of the Amarok are represented on the used market, with the V6 TDI diesel variants commanding particular interest from buyers who tow regularly or cover long highway distances. Each Amarok at Carma is inspected before it is listed, so you know exactly what you are buying.

Why choose a used Volkswagen Amarok?

The Amarok's strongest selling point is the gap it creates between itself and its segment rivals at the premium end of the ute market. The cabin finish, switchgear quality, and seat comfort put it measurably closer to a large SUV than to a traditional work ute. Buyers who spend significant time behind the wheel on highway runs appreciate the combination of low diesel fuel consumption and a settled, car-like ride that the Amarok delivers at speed.

Towing capability is a genuine strength of the V6 TDI variants, with the diesel's torque delivery well suited to heavy trailer work. The first-generation Amarok in particular earned a reputation for its wide load bay, with an internal width that sat above most segment rivals of the era, a genuine working advantage that mattered to buyers using it as a genuine dual-purpose ute rather than a lifestyle choice. For buyers considering alternatives in the segment, the used Ford Ranger and used Toyota HiLux both offer strong used market value and broad service network coverage as comparison points, while the used Isuzu D-MAX is a popular choice for buyers prioritising long-term mechanical simplicity.

Amarok generations available in Australia

First generation (2011 to 2022): The original Amarok introduced a European ute with genuine work credentials to a market dominated by Japanese and American alternatives. It launched with a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel, and a 3.0-litre V6 TDI diesel joined the lineup in Australia from around 2017. The V6 brought a step change in performance and refinement, and these models have aged well on the used market. Earlier first-generation examples are more accessible on price and retain the same core engineering strengths.

Second generation (2023 onwards): The second-generation Amarok was developed in close collaboration with Ford and shares its underpinnings with the current Ranger platform, though each manufacturer has tuned its version independently. The result is a more refined and more capable Amarok with a significantly updated interior. The second-generation model brings a more premium cabin presentation and expanded technology features compared to the original, and it is the version to consider for buyers who want the most modern interpretation of the Amarok.

What to look for when buying a used Amarok

Service history is the starting point for any used Amarok assessment. Volkswagen's TDI diesel engines are built for durability, but they require correct servicing at manufacturer-specified intervals. Oil changes, timing belt or chain replacements (depending on the generation and engine variant), and DSG gearbox services all need to be evidenced in the service record.

The DSG dual-clutch gearbox fitted to most Amarok variants is a particular priority. DSG services are a separate line item from standard servicing, and a car without a clear DSG maintenance record carries an unknown risk of premature gearbox wear. Ask for evidence of DSG fluid changes and, on first-generation models, any associated software updates.

On the first-generation V6, inspect for oil leaks around the engine bay and check that the tow bar and hitch equipment have been fitted by a competent installer. Aftermarket tow bar setups that are not correctly rated or wired can create electrical issues on later models. Check the load tub and tub liner for signs of heavy use that may indicate undisclosed commercial history, particularly on private sale examples.

The broader used dual-cab ute market includes strong competition from the used Mitsubishi Triton and other alternatives, so it is worth comparing specifications and service costs before committing to any single model. For the Amarok buyer who values the premium positioning and V6 diesel, the Amarok's premium over mainstream utes has tended to hold at resale for V6 diesel examples.

Frequently asked questions

What should I look for when buying a used Volkswagen Amarok?

A used Volkswagen Amarok should have a complete service history with evidence of DSG gearbox fluid changes alongside regular oil services. The 3.0-litre V6 TDI diesel is the most popular variant and benefits from consistent servicing at Volkswagen-authorised workshops. On high-kilometre examples, inspect for oil leaks around the engine bay and assess the condition of the tub liner and load area for signs of sustained heavy commercial use.

How does the Amarok compare to the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux?

The used Volkswagen Amarok positions itself above the used Ford Ranger and used Toyota HiLux on interior quality and on-road refinement, with a cabin finish closer to a large SUV than a conventional ute. The Ranger and HiLux offer broader service network coverage across Australia and lower day-to-day running costs. Buyers who tow frequently and cover significant highway kilometres find the Amarok's V6 TDI diesel and ride comfort to be genuine differentiators over the volume alternatives.

Which Amarok generation is better to buy used?

Both generations offer a compelling used proposition at the right price. The first-generation Amarok, particularly the V6 TDI variants from around 2017 onwards, represents strong value and is well supported by Volkswagen's Australian service network. The second-generation model (from 2023) offers a more modern cabin and updated technology but commands a higher price on the used market. Buyers prioritising running costs and accessibility will find more choice at a lower price point in the first-generation range.

What is the Amarok's towing capacity?

Towing capacity on the used Volkswagen Amarok varies by specification. The V6 TDI diesel variants are rated to tow up to 3,500kg with a braked trailer on relevant specifications. Buyers should verify the specific towing rating against the compliance plate and VIN data for their particular car, as ratings differ between variants and should be confirmed before hauling a heavy load.

Is the used Volkswagen Amarok suitable for off-road driving?

The used Volkswagen Amarok is capable on gravel roads, dirt tracks, and light four-wheel drive terrain, particularly on 4MOTION all-wheel drive specifications. It is not set up for serious rock crawling or steep technical terrain in the way a purpose-built off-road platform is, but for the conditions most Australian ute buyers encounter: station access roads, wet paddocks, and light bush tracks, the 4MOTION system delivers confident traction. Ground clearance on the first-generation Amarok is adequate rather than exceptional, and buyers who need to run a ute in demanding off-road conditions regularly should assess whether a platform with higher clearance and a more aggressive diff lock setup better suits their requirements.

What payload capacity does the Volkswagen Amarok offer?

Payload capacity on the used Volkswagen Amarok varies by specification and generation. First-generation V6 TDI variants were rated to carry approximately 1,012 kg, and second-generation models offer similar figures depending on the variant and any factory-fitted accessories. Buyers carrying equipment, tools, or materials should confirm the specific payload rating for their chosen car against the compliance plate, as aftermarket additions such as bull bars, tub liners, and canopies reduce the available payload from the rated figure.
