What to look out for when buying a used Isuzu D-Max

If you’re looking for a trusty ute that has a lot to offer, the used Isuzu D-Max range is one to consider. Here’s a breakdown of all the features.

Single or dual cab

When choosing between single or dual cab, how you’ll be using your ute very much goes into this decision. Whether you’ll be using it for work or play, or a bit of both, there are different cab types that’ll work for you. Single cab utes are typically more work-focussed, and you can do a bit of both work and play on a dual cab ute. On a single cab ute, cab trays or canopies are usually fitted to haul cargo or equipment to job sites. If you’re looking for a single cab used Isuzu D-Max, choose the EX or SX models. A dual cab ute, or a crew cab in Isuzu’s book, offers a balanced feel that’s great for work, commuting, and weekend trips. The practicality and versatility of a dual cab ute is also what makes it a popular choice for families too.

There’s also a third option, called a space cab (also known as a super or king cab). It has one row of standard driver and passenger seats, then a narrower second row with suicide doors that open up like a cupboard. Getting in and out of the cabin or loading in equipment is easier and convenient in this cab style that can be found on the Isuzu D-Max SX or LS-U.

Cab chassis or pickup

Having made a decision between single or dual cab should make this second decision easier. Single cabs are typically widely available as cab chassis utes, and dual cabs are more popular as pickup utes. For more customisation options, choose a cab chassis used Isuzu D-Max EX or SX, which will give you choices from steel trays to equipment canopies and more.

Pickup utes are more designed for comfort or off-roading, and offer more torque for towing. The pickup models SX, LS-M, and LS-T, are equipped with features like heavy duty suspension, hill start assist, and hill descent control. Accessories like bull bars, driving lamps, or snorkels are also some of the few installed extras you can find on many used Isuzu D-Max utes.

Towing capacity

Across the range, the single cab chassis 4x2 low-rider has a braked towing capacity of 2500 kg, while other models have 3500 kg. Trailer sway control is equipped on the D-Max, to make sure you’re towing safely on the road. Before towing your jet ski, boat, or trailers, make sure your trailer is balanced and everything is securely fastened.

AWD/4WD

In general, 4WD would be your choice for off-roading and 2WD for commuting on mostly gravel roads. 4WD provides the extra manoeuvrability and control on tougher terrain and steep inclines, and is offered across the used Isuzu D-Max range including features like sports bars, hill start assist, and terrain command. Without the extra drivetrain on the 2WD models, less weight means better fuel efficiency and lower fuel costs.

What safety features do used Isuzu D-Max utes have?

Standard equipment on the Isuzu D-Max will please many drivers, which includes plenty of active and passive safety tech like anti-lock brake system, electronic stability control, hill start assist, 6 airbags, and side impact bars. On dual-cabs or super-cab models, you’ll also get child seat tethers in the rear. Many Isuzu D-Max variants across the range in the last decade have also received 5-star ANCAP ratings for great overall safety protection.
