Choosing the right used Nissan Navara ute

Buying a used Nissan Navara is not unlike buying any other used ute in the Aussie market. There’s a lot of choice, and a lot to love. Check out some key features here:

Single or dual cab

How you’ll be using your ute is very much what goes into this decision. Single cab utes are more work-focussed, while dual cabs are great for both work and play. Without the longer cabin, single cab utes are more suited to hauling cargo in its cab tray or customised to fit toolboxes or equipment. Choose the Nissan Navara DX or RX for the single cab chassis type.

If you’re looking for a ute for work, commuting, or weekend trips, a dual cab Nissan Navara offers great practicality and a balanced feel. The Navara SL and ST both come with dual cab pickup options.

You’ll also find a king cab chassis or pickup option on the Navara RX and ST. King cab, or super cab, is more like a one-and-a-half cab. It has one row of standard driver and passenger seats, then a narrower second row with both sides of doors that open up like a cupboard. That makes getting in and out the cabin or loading in equipment easier and convenient.

Cab chassis or pickup

Just like single or dual cab, choosing between cab chassis or pickup also depends on purpose. If you’re looking for something flexible that you can customise, a cab chassis ute will let you install steel trays, equipment canopies, and more. Look for the Navara DX or RX for cab chassis models, and you’ll likely be able to find used Nissan Navara utes with the accessories or installations you need all ready to go.

For towing or off-roading, pickup ute models Navara RX, SL, and ST offer more torque for towing and 4WD gear like active brake limited slip and electronic locking rear differentials. Pickup accessories like tonneau covers and weather guards are available as add-ons when you buy new, but you may be able to skip those new car waiting times and get a used Nissan Navara with everything you need.

Towing capacity

All Nissan Navara utes across the range have a braked towing capacity of up to 3500 kg.

Making sure that your trailer is balanced and keeping everything secure are just a few ways to tow everything from jet skis, boats, to campervan trailers with ease.

Fuel economy

The dual cab 4x2 Navara ST and ST-X pickups deliver the lowest fuel consumption of 6.3L/100km from the 2.3L twin turbo-diesel engines. The most fuel efficient 4x4 Navara models are the King Cab ST and ST-X pickups, and dual cab SL pickup at 6.5L/100km.

AWD/4WD

When you’re going to be driving on mostly gravel roads to and from job sites on your commute, you’re generally only going to need 2WD. The 2WD Navara ST and ST-X do the job well with twin turbo-diesel engines, and the less weight means better fuel efficiency and lower fuel costs for you.

As for 4WD, it’s the most obvious choice if you’re going off-roading. You’ll need the extra manoeuvrability and power when you’re driving through difficult terrain or steep inclines. 4WD is offered on all models across the Navara range, with the ST and ST-X including a few more 4WD favourites like sports bars, hill start assist, and hill descent control.

How safe are used Nissan Navara utes?

On the base models DX and RX, standard safety equipment includes essentials like anti-lock braking system, electronic brakeforce distribution, traction control, vehicle dynamic control, and active brake limited slip. Choose a model higher up the range like the ST or ST-X and you’ll get advanced drive-assist, electronic rear-differential lock, reversing sensors, hill start assist, and hill descent control.

All Nissan Navara variants have consistently received maximum 5-star ANCAP ratings, and the Centre for Road Safety have also rated used Nissan Navara utes four out of five stars for used car safety protection of drivers and passengers.
