Keeping your windscreen wiper blades in good condition is essential for clear visibility and safe driving. In this guide, we'll explore why it's important to replace your wiper blades, how to check when they need changing and a step-by-step guide to replacing them yourself. Why do I need to replace my wiper blades?
Wiper blades typically last between 1-2 years. Over time, the rubber on the blades can wear down from daily use and exposure to sunlight, rain, and dirt. Worn wiper blades can lead to streaking, smearing, or even scratching your windscreen, compromising your visibility and safety on the road. To keep your wiper blades effective in maintaining a clear view, learn to recognise when to replace them.
If you've noticed any streaking or squeaky noise coming from your windscreen wipers, chances are that the wiper blades or assembly need replacing. Here are some common signs that your wiper blades need replacing:
Before clicking ‘add to cart’ on those brand new wiper blades, it’s important to find out what type of wiper blade you have. You can check your owner’s manual for this information, or just ask at your local auto store. Most wiper blade replacements have multiple adaptors included for all the different types of wiper blade assembly in various car models.
There’s two ways you can replace your wiper blades: replacing the wiper blade assembly, or you can just change the refills (the rubber part of the blade). Here’s what you’ll need:
Carefully lift the wiper arms away from the windscreen. It should lock into a raised position. Then unclip the blades by pressing the clip and releasing the blade assembly (you may need to refer to your manual for this).
Then gently lower the wiper arm onto a cloth placed on the windscreen. This will prevent it from flicking down and cracking the glass.
Use your old assembly to identify which adaptor you’ll need, then place the clip in. You might also need to compare the two lengths to check that you’ve got the right one. Clip the new blade into the arm, making sure you hear a click so it’s securely attached. Lower the wiper blade back on the windscreen, then you’re done!
Same way as replacing wiper blade assembly, carefully lift the wiper arms away from the windscreen. Then remove the old blade using some pliers to free the rubber from the assembly. You may have to squeeze the end where there’s a clip. Lower the wiper arms onto a cloth on the windscreen until you’re ready for the next step.
Now all you need to do is to slide in the refill, making sure the metal rail is locked into the claws on the assembly all the way to the end. Trim off any excess, allowing an overhang sticking out on the end. Lower the wiper blade, all done.
